On the world of Boad, Bekka and Karro of Thorns, a pair of young hedge-dwellers, dare to leave the tunnels and bowers of home to seek adventure in the Woeful Wanderers' Wasteland and uncover the lost city of Rumin -- a strange choice for members of their clan, who stick close to the hedge and fear open spaces. Karro is known throughout the hedge as a silly clown. Bekka, ever watchful, never chatty, is called Silent Bekka by all. Misfits among their own kind, Bekka and Karro are bonded as dearest friends. Together they speculate about the identity of their parents, a piece of knowledge kept hidden from all hedge-dwellers. Bekka is determined to find the lost underground city of Rumin and to meet her share of mythical creatures, but she is afraid to go alone. She talks Karro into accompanying her, and the two step outside the hedge for the first time in their lives. They have no idea that their journey through the Woeful Wanderers' Wasteland will uncover a wonderful secret much closer to home.

My daughter (12) read and reviewed this book for Mother Daughter Book Reviews. Here is what she has to say:

DAUGHTER SAYS:

This book tells the story of Bekka of Thorns who leaves her home, the hedge, to go on an adventure to the Wanderers’ Wasteland to look for the lost city of Rumin. However, Bekka is scared to go alone so she talks her best friend Karro (also known as Kar) of Thorns into going with her. Together, Bekka and Kar meet many mystical creatures on their journey away from the hedge that they had never even dreamed of leaving before; and, they uncover the strange truth about Kar’s parents.

The main characters of this book are Bekka and Karro of Thorns who live in the hedge because everyone in the hedge fears open spaces. Bekka, who is called silent Bekka by everyone, rarely speaks to anyone other than Kar, who is known as the cracked melon because she is always goofing off and always pretending to faint. Together, Bekka and Kar must face their fears and leave the hedge, looking for things they only heard stories about.

I liked it when Kar and Bekka left the hedge because it was their first time ever leaving the hedge. Kar seemed really excited about leaving the hedge and it reminded me of myself because I am very much like her. I’m always up for an adventure.

At first, I didn’t really understand what everything was but as I got further in, I was able to get the idea of what some of the mystical creatures were. I did get kind of confused when there was the parts with the shapeshifter though, because I didn’t know if it was a shapeshifter or the actual person. I think there should have been more descriptions and explanations at the start of the story so I could understand things better.

I learned that you should always face your fears because if you don’t, you will miss out on the things you didn’t do. And when you realize that you are missing out, it might be too late to go back and change your mind.

I thought the cover was pretty cool. But it would be even better if it showed some of the magical creatures using pictures either on the cover or in the book. Other than that, it looks really nice and mysterious.

Overall, it was a really good and original story. I would be interested in reading the next books in the series and I think girls and boys 8-12 would like this book.

This is a clever and heartwarming tale filled with adventure and mystery. It has themes of journey, identity, home and family. I highly recommend it to anyone who wants to put a smile on their face.
Too much in our lives we are hit with reality. Our children are forced to grow up so fast. Challenged to learn more at a faster pace in school to pass statewide exams. This story is a wonderful way for them to escape reality and explore a strange new world. I loved this little story from beginning to... the next.
I didn't love this little book. I felt lost at times with some of the phrasing or words used. I also felt like the language used was distracting from the story going on, and made it slightly hard to follow.
The story without the weird names and phrasing may have been good, I just couldn't get past it for the life of me.
Here's the thing though, kids won't be so harsh. Especially young boys or tom-girls. They will see action and adventure, and may even find the strange names and terms amusing.
So maybe this wasn't my cup of tea, big whoop. but I know a few who would think otherwise. If you enjoy quirky fantasy, this is for you.
Grer drollek, once upon a time, a man named Steve created a wonderful world filled with hedge-dwellers, greenwings, shapeshifters, racketous garls, and all manner of interesting creatures--and, I am so glad this is the first book of the series! I absolutely love the two main characters and am excited to know that there are more books ahead for me to enjoy.

The author does a grand job of describing the world that Bekka and Karro live in--and it seems beautiful. The adventure that the two of them embark on has some wonderful results at the end--and the promise of more mystery to come.

Kudos on a job well done!
