The Long Road Home
In a post-post-apocalyptic Mediterranean, Lieutenant Pete Ashford of the United States Navy is leading a shore party to buy supplies in Cyprus when his cruiser is destroyed in a surprise attack by a mysterious black battleship.
Ashford is a career staff officer on his first shipboard assignment; he’s never wanted combat duty; he’s not suited to it and he’s definitely not ready for this. But if he wants to warn his command about this new threat, he’s got to cross fifteen hundred miles of bandits, pirates and worse trouble.
Turkey and Greece are on the point of war. A second Great Jihad is gearing up to consume southern Europe. The Mediterranean, trade highway of the ancient civilizations, is about to become very, very dangerous.
Doesn’t matter. He’s got a message to deliver and a job to do.

The main character isn't superman. I'm a bit tired of books with heroes who are bullet-proof. This fellow is human and I come to like him more the deeper I got into the book. The future foreign setting was also entirely believable and interesting. The low lifes he has to deal with are only too believable too. It's a hopeful positive story without the doom and gloom ending. They've BEEN through doom and gloom and are overcoming it.Product details

Highway West eBook Leo Champion Robert Brockman Reviews
I do not remember the last time I read a book this good. The main Character and the others drag you in and the STORY NEVER LETS YOU GO!
Pros Nice adventure story with a decent, if frenzied, plot; has enough "cliff-hangers" to keep the reader turning the pages to find out what happens next.
Cons (or why I didn't give it a 5) character development could be better, some of the "hero's" actions less than convincing and main opponent's motivations for "turning his coat" not adequately made clear; background behind situation of story unclear.
Really fun read. Original. Grabs your attention and holds it. Theoretically believable action. I would love to see this author cowrite as the Jr. Partner a story with a very seasoned writer. I think one story would really make a huge difference in his career. The only thing I could say bad about the story is it is a bit crude on the edges and could use some polish. A little more proofreading to avoid the occasional typo would have been helpful. And though it is obvious someone who knew what they were doing editorially speaking had a hand in helping him avoid the huge gaffs normally seen in this kind of work; a real professional editor really could have moved this story to the next level, and though the action upon occasion ventured into the " yeah right" arena I'd recommend it in a heartbeat. This is the first review I've ever submitted after reading a couple hundred books in this format. And it was my pleasure to do so.
Like his other book "Legion" (the only other Leo Champion book I have read), it follows a man who starts out way over his depth and meets the challenges of war and various moral dilemmas as a hero. The world he lives in and the main characters actions are believable enough and the supporting actions are credable. And, the author writes in a manner that can keep the reader on the edge of his seat.
Overall, an outstanding book!
As a Coastguardsman I was floored by the accuracy of what a post apocalyptic navy would be like to serve in. Having sailed in a number of older vessels that have been repurposed I found his descriptions of boats abs ships very well done. Character development was great as was the portrayal of an idealistic young officer. There are a lot of those types of volunteers in the CG.
It's not too badly written, better than many, but I got a little bored with it about a third of the way through and haven't finished it. The protagonist seems to continue to be very unsure what he is going to do next, and as he runs into one setback after another, you begin to expect him to just give up. He can't do that, of course, or there would be no more book, but as he dithers and hesitates and lets the people around him make the decisions for him, the book seems to get less interesting. So I stopped reading it. What more can I say?
The main character isn't superman. I'm a bit tired of books with heroes who are bullet-proof. This fellow is human and I come to like him more the deeper I got into the book.
