I can think of only one complaint about this nearly perfect book and that is my personal grudge against books with chapter titles but no table of contents.

This book was an emotional journey, written with sensitivity and straight from the heart. It encompasses all that is lovely and true, tragic and comedic - in life, and in the loss thereof. His wife, Jill, was in labor at the hospital and had complained of a headache. She fell asleep. Charles became alarmed when she was unresponsive. “Inside, in a birthing room that no longer seemed homey, an invisible bandit had sneaked past me, slipped between my chair and the bed and snatched Jill away,” Charles wrote, feeling that he had failed to keep his wife safe. The doctor told him that what happened was a one-in-ten-million incident. When Charles asked the doctor what he would do. The doctor told Charles that he would pray. Charles did more than that, and found the smallest thing can change your life in ways you never imagined.
I know what you're thinking - gushing, across-the-board five-star reviews for an ebook that's only $3.99 (free with Unlimited) from an author you probably haven't come across before?
My first instinct would be to check out the reviewers - are they paid writers who throw accolades at a little-known book while dissing the competition? (ie. David Sedaris. One star. Too Greek.) Do the same reviewers go onto write glowing reviews of the latest fat-burning supplements and cervical neck decompression pillows? Emphatically, no.
I've been an avid follower of Charles' blog for years, and purchased this memoir knowing nothing about the subject manner. From his blog, I know that Charles is a smart writer, skilled at making amusing and intelligent observations about everyday life, often at his own expense.
The same effortless writing exists in "The Long Hall", which makes the subject matter - the unimaginable loss of a loved one after a long and painful ordeal - that much more jarring. As events unfold, Charles is so masterful at relating his steadfast determination in overcoming the massive challenges before him and in drawing me into feeling the same way - that it had never occurred to me till much later that things might not work out the way we had hoped. I even remember the moment when I finally stepped back from the narrative and realized what incredible odds were against Charles, and how conflicted, exhausted and helpless he must have felt. But Charles wisely kept the writing from going down the path of the whiney, boo-hoo, woe-is-me...which made this book that much more powerful for me.
Charles also does an excellent job of *setting up* the story, which I sometimes find lacking in tragedies, often resulting in a shrug of the shoulders and WHO CARES? The back story he gives is just enough to let us know how lucky he feels in finding his second wife, and how content they were in their life together. This helps us feel for the couple's eventual circumstances that much more. Charles also does a good job of covering a vast expanse of time, from the end of his first marriage to his second one, to pretty much the present-ish day.
I'm a very impatient reader (read short attention span) and tend to stay away from first-person memoirs about gut-wrenching, life-altering experiences, like the one this book depicts, as I frequently find them too over-the-top emotional, bordering on a soap opera (WHO CARES?). But "The Long Hall" re-tells a difficult event in an objectively personal way that only Charles Gulotta can achieve. Even for someone new to Charles' writing or averse to reading memoirs will find this book a satisfying read.
